Visiting  a Tuscan Vineyard

Tuscany has many attributes that make it a coveted travel destination throughout the year. Whether you seek delicious regional wines, delicious foods or  want to admire the famous Tuscan rolling hills, Fattoria San Michele a Torri has it all. Located just 30 minutes south of Florence’s centro storico, this organic farm and winery is a must see for those searching for the authentic Tuscan experience.

The current proprietors have been running operations since 1993, producing some of the best and most affordable wine in the area. In addition to their stellar wine selection, delicacies such as prosciutto, salame, finocchiona, capocollo and many other charcuteries can be found here. All their charcuterie is derived from Cinta Senese pigs and are DOP certified. DOP is short for Denominazione di Origine Protetta (“Protected Designation of Origin”). This certification ensures that products are locally grown and packaged. It guarantees that the food was made by local farmers and artisans, using traditional methods. Italian specialties only recieve DOP recognition by following a strict set of guidelines. Every step, from production to packaging, is regulated.

Wine Tasting Package

Their wine tasting packages, which include meat and cheese boards, are the best way to experience San Michele. The tasting selections include samples of their various cured meats, cheeses, walnuts and delicious eggs from their free-range chickens. There are several options, depending on the size of your group and on your budget. On a recent visit, we chose the lunch tasting. At 20 euro a person, for our group of 4, we had generous samples of several wines and very large tasting board. Our host gave us background information on everything that was served. It was an amazing value, especially considering everything that was included.

All the packages include a tour of the grounds and an explanation of the wine making process. The knowledgeable guide provides an in depth history of both Fattoria San Michele a Torri and wine making in general. All organic waste such as leaves, branches and the tannins used for making the wine get repurposed in their organic compost. Nothing on this farm is wasted.

The view on both the drive to the farm, as well as the grounds themselves are breathtaking. Olive trees and grape vines covering the rolling hills as far as the eye can see is what you can expect when visiting. Fattoria San Michele a Torri embodies the most beautiful qualities of Tuscany and is easily accessible, both financially and geographically. The next time you are in the Tuscan region, pay them a visit and have the experience of a lifetime.
